Maybe you don't want four legs, but one big form of support in the center of the table in your Dining Room. You can have one central wooden support with smaller legs of its own, reaching out like roots of a natural tree. Or, you can have a modern-looking sculpture of metallic shapes that form together in a clean display beneath your clear glass table top. Or, perhaps you want an elaborate wooden carving with a clear table top to display it.
Only use a broad dining table if you have a need for central space for such items as a centerpiece and candles. Otherwise, 36 inches is more than adequate. If you have only a small space for the table, a circular table is better than a rectangular one, and a pedestal base can seat more than a base with three or four legs.
Decorating the dining room is different from other spaces in your house. If your room is part of another room, for example a dining area in your kitchen, it is important to define the dining space visually. One of the easiest ways to do this is by using a large area rug underneath the table. The rug should be large enough to extend past the chairs in order to give a visual space definition to the dining area. Using a rug in this way will give the visual cue that signals the space as separate from the kitchen. Used in this way a rug becomes more than a simple design element, it almost becomes a structural element in your room.
