Almost all room tables are made of wood. Some are molded from pressed wood, but sturdier-and more expensive-pieces are from solid wood pieces screwed or bolted together. What wood color or grain you use is a personal choice. Whether you buy matched chairs or use coordinated pieces for contrast is also a personal decision. There are no hard-and-fast rules to what dining room furniture must comprise.
One of the best ways to add elegance and sophistication to a dining room is to include buffet furniture in your design. Whether you choose to mix or match wood tones, there is a buffet to meet almost any decorating requirement you might have. If you have the benefit of a large room to decorate, you might want to include two buffets in your design. Or, you might want to invest in a buffet that has the option of adding a hutch on top of it. Dining room buffet furniture could include useful pieces such as a buffet sideboard, a buffet with hutch, or a buffet serving table.
Only use a broad dining table if you have a need for central space for such items as a centerpiece and candles. Otherwise, 36 inches is more than adequate. If you have only a small space for the table, a circular table is better than a rectangular one, and a pedestal base can seat more than a base with three or four legs.
