Some families look for a more old-fashioned design in the dining room, while some look for comfortability and a homey feel. Whichever route you choose, it's good to stick with a singular design throughout when decorating the room. As this is generally the room that's used for neighbors, friends, and guests, it's good that they get a good sense of who you are and what you're style is like in this room so that you can bring your own style to the place.
Now if a more informal and casual setting is required for the dining room, neutral colors may be a better option, because they won't dominate the area or create too much of an impact. Neutrals are calming colors and also create a pleasant ambiance.
Color is also very important for setting the tone in the dining room. Different hues will evoke different reactions from people on a psychological level. For instance, red naturally tends to increase a persons metabolism. Its presence can make you more energetic, and volatile, but can also increase a persons hunger, and make them more receptive to taste. On the other hand blue is quite the opposite in effect, calming, soothing, and actually repressing a persons desire to eat.
