Blank wall space doesn't do much to enhance the décor of any room, and in a dining room it can make the room seem cold and unwelcoming. To create a focal point, you can use one large item and accent it with smaller items or you can create a wall grouping with several smaller items. For example, you could start with a large painting, a wrought iron or an architectural wall hanging, a tapestry or mirror and accent it with smaller coordinating items, such as candle wall sconces, vintage plates or cast iron accents. Or creating a stunning arrangement with a visually interesting collage of smaller pieces: tie them together by color, theme, or material.
You may want to bring your room into this century with modern or contemporary lighting and ceiling fans. These types of renovations can cost a little more than curtains and rugs but is also an investment in your home. You will still want to stay with the style you have implemented in your kitchen and the rest of the house. Look for ceiling fans with up lighting so it illuminates not only the table but the rest of the room as well. Many ceiling fans can be purchased with lighting included.
Whichever your practise is, it is nevertheless important that the room is bright and airy, and comfortable to eat in. The decorative accents should be focused on expanding the size of room, and light colors and mirrors can make a room appear significantly larger than it is. This is particularly true if you have mirrors aligned to reflect each other, and also reflect the windows if you have them.
