Color Palette: Do not assume that because a color is your favorite, it will also look good on the walls of the dining room or create a harmonious whole with the dining room furniture. Also, when choosing a color palette, understand that what looks good in the day in natural light may not necessarily look as good or even look the same in artificial light. In general, colors such as reds, oranges and yellows work to create a more formal atmosphere while colors such as golden or creamy yellow, terracotta, wine, burgundy or dusty rose are considered ideal for a dining room. These colors are said to stimulate the appetite and also have been shown to promote enjoyable conversation.
The style should reflect that of the rest of your house and compliment your other rooms and furniture selections. You can mix and match styles of furniture, as long as they blend nicely together and do not clash with each other. You can have a modern kitchen table, a contemporary sofa, and add some traditional dining room furniture to your home, if you select the pieces carefully and ensure they compliment one another.
Decorating the dining room is different from other spaces in your house. If your room is part of another room, for example a dining area in your kitchen, it is important to define the dining space visually. One of the easiest ways to do this is by using a large area rug underneath the table. The rug should be large enough to extend past the chairs in order to give a visual space definition to the dining area. Using a rug in this way will give the visual cue that signals the space as separate from the kitchen. Used in this way a rug becomes more than a simple design element, it almost becomes a structural element in your room.
