Another strategy with chairs is to create extra seating by using a thin bench that goes along one wall. Most of the time the bench can remain where it is but when you have guests over you can pull the bench out and add it to one end of the table for extra seating.
The style should reflect that of the rest of your house and compliment your other rooms and furniture selections. You can mix and match styles of furniture, as long as they blend nicely together and do not clash with each other. You can have a modern kitchen table, a contemporary sofa, and add some traditional dining room furniture to your home, if you select the pieces carefully and ensure they compliment one another.
The lighter the wood, the less space it seems to take up, although obviously this is only an illusion. You need to leave at least 4 feet space between each side of the dining table and the walls or other furniture, and also a minimum of 24 inches between chairs. That should be enough information to enable you to work out the size of table you can fit in and how many people you can seat. Don't try to get away with less space, or your guests will feel squashed and uncomfortable.
